Forgotten how to make search string

Hello

I was here long ago and got help about how to create a search string, so that binary boy would only look for files that contained certain names or words.

I've forgotten how to do it, and, had to reformat my machine, so all my old lists are gone.

Can anyone tell me where to enter the text to create a search string, and, do the words or phrases have to be separated by commas or anything like that? Is there a character limit to how long you can make a search string?

thanks

Your old thread is here: http://www.binaryboy.com/forum/showthread.php?t=101

That should answer most of what you want.

If you want each group list to have it's own search string, go to the group list editor, click the Advanced button and enter it in the Search field. You can assign a search string to each newsgroup by right-clicking the group in the group list editor and clicking Properties. Then enter it in the Search field.

To apply a search string to every search every in every newsgroup, enter it in the global search field on the Search Strings tab in the Settings.

For a search string that's likely to change every day, enter it in the Search field you see when you start a search.

The maximum size of a search string is about 32,767 characters long.

ok thanks.

let's say i want to search this huge newsgroup of old car photos, but i'm only interested in cars between the years 1941 and 1951.

two questions: would the search string be something like this

1941 1942 1943 1944 1945 1946 1947 1948 1949 1950 1951

or like this
1941, 1942, 1943, 1944, 1945, 1946, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1950, 1951

or like this
"1941" "1942" "1943" "1944" "1945" "1946" "1947" "1948" "1949" "1959" "1951"

or would any of those work? I dont want to end up wading thru a bunch of images downloaded of cars from the 80s and 90s

second question: I assume if i add the characters *.jpg to the search string, then any file with *.jpg will download?

All three of your examples would work. You wouldn't see a difference between spaces and commas unless you had a more complicated search string.

[Oops. Correction. I suggested using 194? 195? but I didn't read the message correctly. All 3 of you search strings will work.]

Yes. *.jpg will download any file with .jpg in the subject. .jpg alone would also work.
