Default search strings for a list?

are they coming from 'Search' dialog box (the one that pops up when you press on Search button on toolbar) or is it the one that comes from
Advanced properties dialog box of a list. My understanding is that it is the second. Right now my binary boy for some reason decides to disregard the Advanced Search string and uses the one at Search dialog box. Any ideas on how to fix this.

checked my advanced search string for strings of type "" to make sure that this isn't the reason the list downloads everything.

They are all used unless you've disabled any on the Search Strings tab in the Settings. A file will be downloaded if the subject matches ANY of the search strings and NONE of the filters.

If any of your search strings are set to * you will get all files.

Remove or disable the search string you don't want to use.
