netnews.attbi.com Too many connection errors

I'm trying to use binaryboy with my broadband account, but the server seems really bad. Is there a setting in binaryboy that can help with this error? (#400 Too Many Connections)

I've got binary boy set to max of 2 connections, i've tried 1, and that also didn't help. Thanks for any info (such as find a different server, etc)

Are you using v1.90? It could potentially create too many connections. Try upgrading to v1.91 at http://www.binaryboy.com/patch.php

If the server doesn't recognize the closed connections right away, you should avoid using the "Skip" buttons on the Progress tab because they cause a lot of open/closes.

Also keep in mind that Binary Boy uses an extra connection to download subjects. You're really using 2 download connections + 1 for subjects. Binary Boy won't work with servers that allow only 1 connection.

netnews.attbi.com is junk during certain times of the day, timing out and then claiming too many connections. It was worse with BB 1.90 but still exists in 1.91. I have seen newsgroup posts which indicate non-BB users have this problem also.

Increasing the timeout seems to help a little, sometimes the server will wake up instead of timing out, and in the meantime if you have 2 connections then the one which is working will use more of the bandwidth and you don't lose much.

Since this seems to go on for hours at a time, if I don't feel like coming back later I try alternate servers. I wrote down a few alternate attbi servers I saw posted in attbroadband.ne.techtalk.general and they seem to work, though they usually have fewer posts than netnews does.

Here's my list: 204.127.202.16, 24.91.0.74, 24.128.8.70. Also, my netnews maps to 65.96.0.178, if yours maps somewhere else try that one also. I don't know whether these are attbi servers for other parts of the country or whether they are old mediaone servers still hanging around.

Also, I use the BB -multi command line switch, which allows me to easily check another server by running a second copy.

HTH.

I have this problem with the latest beta build #1165.
It does seem to be related to skip in that the problem happens when a group is skipped automatically from nothing matching.

Is there anything I can post here that would help in isolating the problem?

I am going to try another fresh install.. But it was already from a recent system rebuild.

darthwonka's reply to Eric #270 @

I reinstalled it and still see the problem.

It will work for the first group or so, but then it will just starting using more than 2 connections.

HELP! My ISP has already disabled my account once on this problem!

How many connections does your news server allow? What is your "download connections" value set to on the Server tab in the settings?

You could create a log to see what's going on. The build you have logs extra information about the number of connections created. To create a log, run Binary Boy from the Start | Run window like this:
binboy.exe -log -ilog -dlog

That will write Binary Boy's progress to log.txt in the Binary Boy folder (usually c:\program files\binary boy\log.txt) Stop the program if you get an error then send the log to support@binaryboy.com Don't post the log here.

Even if you don't have the log enabled, there should be an error in errorlog.txt that looks like this:

Warning: Max slots=xx and Active=xx, OpenOrBusy=xx

If you see this error in errorlog.txt, please send it to me so I can see what the numbers are.

The server only allows '2' connections. The setting in Binary Boy is '1' download connection.

The snippet below repeats for a while..So I just included one of the entries

BinaryBoy's reply to Eric #273 @

The following line from the log shows that Binary Boy doesn't think it has any connections open at all:

Before: 0 open, 0 active, 1 m_nslots

It means there are no connections open and 1 can be created. The line is logged at the same time the server is returning "too m any connections" error messages.

You can verify the number of open connections yourself by going to the command prompt and typing this:

netstat -n

The command prompt is usually accessible from Start | Programs | Accessories | Command Prompt

That will list all your computer's internet connections. News server connections will have ":119" at the end of the foreign address. There shouldn't be more than one in the established state.

Please let me know what you find.

darthwonka's reply to Eric #274 @

With all the error messages with the too many connections responses from the server, the netstat -n reveals only 2 actual connections to the news server.

I first complained to them about it because their servers were recently rebuilt.. They said that what was changed would not effect news connectivity and blamed my client.

3 cheers for ISP's!

I sent them a snippet from the netstat responses while bb was running.. Maybe someone will put pride aside and actually service the customer for once!

Thanks for your help! I will post what I find out.

BinaryBoy's reply to Eric #275 @

Ah. Right. I meant to say there shouldn't be more than 2 connections, not 1.

darthwonka's reply to Eric #286 @

If only there was a head-slap emoticon here!

Just on a whim, I decided to shutoff my firewall software (Sygate Personal Firewall). The error messages vanished and once again I am downloading.

So.. Now I need to figure out how to both keep the firewall software running as well as allow the right traffic through it.
I may try opening up port 119 for binaryboy and my news server.

DOH!!!
